Ear acupuncture

Auricular therapy, or ear acupuncture, is a form of acupuncture that involves treatment of acupuncture points in the outer ear. The outer ear is richly supplied with nerves, and it is considered that the stimulation of these nerves by acupuncture is one of the mechanisms of action of ear acupuncture.

In the UK ear acupuncture is most commonly used for addiction in all its forms and weight loss, but can be useful for any medical condition. There is an evidence base for the following:
  • addiction - drugs, alcohol, smoking, foods
  • weight loss
  • anxiety, phobias,
  • insomnia
  • migraine
  • acne
  • menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes
  • pre and post operative symptoms such as pain and anxiety.
There are two methods of treatment - needling, and the insertion of pins for pressure in between treatments. The pins for home treatment are either seeds, needles, or magnets.
